Background:
Built in 1908, this was the first Bristol school to have electricity. Its buildings are Grade II listed and it is an urban school a mile from the city centre, 'within walking distance' of the Waterfront museum and famous landmarks that are used to enhance lessons. Southville serves a 'rich mixed' population of professionals, artists, business people, educators, house parents and unemployed members of the community. Cultural backgrounds stem from 'various parts of Europe', Ethiopia, the Caribbean and Asia. 'Excellent' parental support is provided for the formal curriculum, extra-curricular activities and playground developments. Southville is 'keen to also maintain a balanced curriculum' with performing arts being 'high on agenda'. In 1999, pupils danced in the Victoria rooms and Hippodrome, and participated in the Elgar festival and produced Shakespeare for a 'kids Romeo and Juliet'. There is also a dance and percussion event supported by parents who are professional musicians and dancers. 'Most children are aware of the world beyond Southville'. The school's 'outreach fundraising' supports elderly neighbours, children in Romania and Water Aid.
