Background:

Built about 120 years ago, Hotwells serves an area of western central Bristol that includes a mix of private and local authority housing. It has developed 'close links' with the local community. In March 1997, the school 'made an commitment to use Investors in People as a framework for school improvement'. Links were made with the TLO (Teaching and Learning Organisation)and WESTEC (Western Training and Enterprise Council) to train the whole staff. This focus on training and development has 'raised the profile of the school'. The school vision statement, 'Learning together - learning for life' is 'practised and meaningful to all staff and pupils'. The school 'sees itself as a learning organisation' - all staff and pupils being involved in 'development activities'. The school has an 'active' after-school provision which is organised by play workers. This operates throughout the holiday periods which ensures pupils of working parents have organised care/play facilities. The school achieved the 'Education Extra' School of Distinction Award in 1997 and 1998 for its range of after-school activites which operate at different times throughout the year. These include singing, French club, gardening, Morris dancing, netball and football. In the past two years the school has achieved an Education Business Partnership South West Award, the Children's Parliament (runner-up), South West Essay Prize and 'various sporting and arts awards'. The school charity fund raising is focused towards Amnesty International, as well as other local and national charities. The school also went into partnership with a community music workshop to compose a song to accompany an orchestral piece for the Millennium, and has sporting links with a company which offers football training called 'Goalband'.
